When PG&E de-energizes lines during high-wind and wildfire conditions, a battery keeps your selected circuits — refrigeration, internet, lighting, medical equipment — running automatically, without a noisy generator. Systems switch over in a fraction of a second so you may barely notice the grid is down.
On PG&E time-of-use plans, electricity is most expensive in the late-afternoon and evening peak. A battery lets you use stored energy during those peak hours instead of buying from the grid at the highest rate. Actual savings depend on your rate plan, usage, and system size.
Under NEM 3.0, exporting solar back to the grid is worth far less than it used to be. Storing your midday solar in a battery and using it later in the day is now how most new solar-plus-battery systems get the most value from what they generate.

Battery capacity is measured two ways, and both matter. Getting the size right is about matching your goals to your loads — here’s how to think about it.
kWh (kilowatt-hours) is how much energy the battery stores — this drives how long it can run your loads. kW (kilowatts) is how much power it can deliver at once — this drives how many things you can run simultaneously. A simple way to estimate runtime: usable capacity ÷ average load. For example, a 10 kWh battery serving a steady 1 kW load runs for roughly 10 hours.
During your consultation we look at whether you want essential- load or whole-home backup; whether you have air conditioning, electric water heating, a pool, a well pump, electric cooking, or EV charging; how long you want to ride through an outage; and whether solar will recharge the battery during daylight. Then we recommend a range, not a one-size-fits-all number.
