AC-Coupled vs. Integrated Battery Architecture
AC-coupled batteries can often be added while leaving an existing solar inverter in place. Integrated systems may provide advantages on new solar projects but can require a different approach on retrofits. The correct architecture depends on the existing equipment and whether preserving that equipment is technically and economically sensible.
Existing Enphase Solar
For a home already using Enphase microinverters, the IQ Battery 10C is a natural option to evaluate because it stays within the Enphase ecosystem. We still compare power, storage, space and price against other compatible systems instead of assuming the brand match is automatically best.
Existing String-Inverter Solar
FranklinWH’s AC-coupled architecture is one retrofit option we may evaluate. Tesla Powerwall 3 can also be added to existing solar in supported configurations. The existing inverter, utility design and backup method determine which path is cleaner.
Protect the Existing Interconnection Strategy
If the home has legacy solar, changes to inverter equipment, solar size or interconnection configuration should be reviewed before work begins. The battery proposal should identify what solar equipment stays, what changes and what utility paperwork is expected.
